If you can help, parkas can be picked up in the armory on Thursday, August 13 after the band family picnic. Parkas must be signed out by a parent, but can be returned at any band practice by the parent or student.

Dan BolenWe are pleased to welcome Dan Bolen as student teacher for the 2015 fall semester. Bolen, a Dover native, is a senior at the University of Akron where he is majoring in Music Education. After he graduates in December his goal is to become a band director. While his preference would be to work with middle school bands, he is enjoying his time with the MTSB students and would be open to a high school position as well.

Bolen started his instrumental music career on the euphonium. He switched to the sousaphone after 8th grade when he marched with the Dover Marching Tornadoes, and later with the University of Akron Marching Band.

When he had the opportunity to choose a district for his student teaching, he chose Massillon due to its proximity and the environment surrounding the program. Aware of some of the history of the MTSB, Bolen is looking forward to learning more about both the traditions and the community, and says "...the more I'm here, the more I realize that it's something special."

Mr. Bolen is the first student teacher in current director Jason Neel's tenure. While he will begin working with small groups, Neel plans to place him into more teaching situations, taking on larger groups as the season progresses. Once the school year starts, Neel will give Bolen instructional time in the classroom, including turning over entire class periods.

Bolen is excited to be learning from Mr. Neel, the other directors, and the kids. While his biggest challenge may be in learning everyone's name, he is most looking forward to helping the instrumental music students attain a high level of achievement.

The 2015 Edition of the Massillon Tiger Swing Band is underway!!  Squad leaders reported for duty for three days of leadership training from July 8-10, and the full band began summer rehearsals bright and early on Monday morning July 13th.  The first week of rehearsals involves indoor work, with the band divided into majorettes, wind, and percussion who practice separately. smith a creAt the WHS Honors Ceremony on May 13, Massillon Tiger Swing Band's own Amanda Smith was named Miss Massillonian.

Miss Smith has been a four-year member of the MTSB and has served as a Squad and Section Leader. She was also a member of the Jazz Orchestra, Pit Orchestra, Wind Orchestra, and the Basketball Band.  Upon graduation Smith will study at the Aultman College of Nursing with the goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner.  A student in the WHS Career Tech department, she recently earned her state license in Cosmetology.

The Miss Massillonian award is a 70+ year tradition in the Massillon City Schools, starting in 1941*.   The award, along with Outstanding Senior Boy, is based on academic performance, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work.  This year's Outstanding Senior Boy is Zachary Wolfe.

In addition to Miss Smith, other Instrumental Music students were finalists for the two awards. Kassandra Meyer, Haley Myer, and Emily Powell all were finalists for Miss Massillonian, while Brandon May and Ben Myers were finalists for Outstanding Senior Boy.

* In 2011, the Massillon Museum had an exhibition on the history of Miss Massillonian.
A review of the exhibition and some history of the award are viewable on the Independent's website.
