Vice-President: Brian Constable

Because of their Superior ratings at the recent District Contest, the WHS Symphonic Band and the WHS Wind Orchestra will both have the opportunity to compete in the State Large Group Contest!

The state contest will be held on Saturday, April 27th at GlenOak High School.  The contest is free and open to the public. The Symphonic Band is scheduled to perform at 11:00am, and the Wind Orchestra at 12:45pm.  Please note that no cameras or recording devices, video or audio, are allowed at any contest site.

The State Large Group Contest is sponsored by the Ohio Music Education Association.  From the OMEA website:

For music to be indispensable to learning and life, it must be more than a shallow, passing experience for the student. Increased proficiency increases enjoyment, and competence begets respect for competence. Quality is not a limiting factor for the individual, but puts within his or her grasp an otherwise inaccessible treasure store of the world’s cultural riches.

We wish the best of luck to those students who are participating in the State Contest!!

The Band Boosters are a dedicated group of volunteers who work countless hours to support the Massillon Tiger Swing Band.  However, with the MTSB in the spotlight, the boosters work mostly "behind-the-scenes". An article published in the Massillon Independent acknowledges their hard work as it follows booster president Rob Smith preparing the concessions stand for the weekend's OHSAA State Football Championships.  The Band Boosters run the concessions stands in Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, and all proceeds from the sales help defray band costs such as uniforms, instruments, and music.

We thank the Band Boosters for all their hard work. The band wouldn't be as successful as it is without the dedicated boosters, parents, and volunteers!!

Drum Major Dan McCullough is featured Student Athlete of the Week on WEWS-TV in Cleveland.

In addition to being the leader of the Swing Band, McCullough, a Junior, runs cross-country, maintains a 3.8 GPA, and sings in the advanced choir.

Chris SmithIt is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of former MTSB director Chris Smith. Chris was a friend, teacher, mentor, and inspiration to many in our band family and in our community.

Chris was band director from 1991-1999, and returned to the helm for the 2002-2003 seasons. During his tenure, the band increased from 70 members to a high of 186, and the music program received its first ever OMEA Superior rating. Beloved by the students and staff alike, Smith brought an era of fun, excitement, and innovation to the band shows.

Chris will be remembered as a devoted parent, demanding teacher, and dedicated friend. We offer our deepest sympathies to his family.

The 2012 Massillon Tiger Swing Band closed out the regular season with a pair of memorable performances. The pregame show included the traditional  and recognized the Seniors. At halftime, the band reprised the popular "Rhythm Show" which featured a 140-piece "Stomp"-style rhythm section!

The video of the Bird Band/Patriotic show which was performed at the halftime of the Massillon-Steubenville game on September 21, 2012 is available to watch.  This performance pays tribute to both America and former director George "Red" Bird, who revolutionized marching bands upon his arrival in Massillon in 1938.

During pregame that evening, the Washington High School Advanced Choir joined the band for the singing of the National Anthem and the Alma Mater.
