Ohio's Oldest High School Football Band - Since 1914

Tiger Swing Band

At the WHS Honors Ceremony on May 14, Massillon Tiger Swing Band's own Taylor Wicks and Dan McCullough were named Miss Massillonian and Outstanding Senior Boy, respectively.

Miss Wicks has been a four-year member of the band and has served as a Section Leader. She was a student director at last fall's Senior Show, where she led the band in a rendition of Funkytown, by Lipps, Inc.  Upon graduation Taylor will study pre-med at the Ohio State University.

Mr. McCullough has also been a member of the band for all four years, and has led the band as Drum Major for three of those years.  Dan will also be attending the Ohio State University in the fall, where he will be studying Middle Childhood Education.

The Miss Massillonian award is a 70+ year tradition in the Massillon City Schools, starting in 1941*.  Outstanding Senior Boy was added in 1953.  The awards are based on academic performance, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work.

The MTSB was well represented this year. In addition to Wicks and McCullough, finalists for the awards included MTSB members Christine Collins and Zane Radcliffe.

* In 2011, the Massillon Museum had an exhibition on the history of Miss Massillonian.
A review of the exhibition and some history of the award are viewable on the Independent's website.

Because of their Superior ratings at the recent District Contest, the WHS Symphonic Band and the WHS Wind Orchestra will both have the opportunity to compete in the State Large Group Contest!

The state contest will be held on Friday, May 2 at GlenOak High School.  The contest is free and open to the public. The Wind Orchestra is scheduled to perform at 5:05pm, and the Symphonic Band at 9:40pm.  Please note that no cameras or recording devices, video or audio, are allowed at any contest site.

The State Large Group Contest is sponsored by the Ohio Music Education Association.  From the OMEA website:

For music to be indispensable to learning and life, it must be more than a shallow, passing experience for the student. Increased proficiency increases enjoyment, and competence begets respect for competence. Quality is not a limiting factor for the individual, but puts within his or her grasp an otherwise inaccessible treasure store of the world’s cultural riches.

We wish the best of luck to those students who are participating in the State Contest!!
