Ohio's Oldest High School Football Band - Since 1914

Tiger Swing Band

The Massillon Tigers Band Boosters consists of band parents and other persons interested in promoting instrumental music in the MCSD. If your child is involved in the band program, you are already a member! The Boosters staff the concession stands during football games and other band events, maintain and organize the band uniforms, act as chaperones to away games/events, and provide support to the band directors.

As we near the end of this school year, we are also nearing the election of officers for the 2016-2017 academic year.  Elections will be held on May 5th, just prior to the 7:00pm Spring Concert.  Any band parent, current or incoming, who is interested in running for office, is asked to submit a short bio to Lisa Markley  via email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or turn it in at the booster meeting on April 21st.

Positions to be elected in May:

  • President
  • Vice-President
  • Treasurer
  • Administrative Secretary
  • Coordinating Secretary
  • Alumni Representative
  • Past Booster Representative

If you wish to know more about the responsibilities of each position, please speak with one of the current officers, or visit the Band Boosters page. There you will find a roster of current officers and position descriptions.  The next booster meeting is April 21st.  Meetings are held in the WHS Band Room (Door 23) at 7:00pm and usually run less than an hour.

A proposal to amend the by-laws of the Instrumental Music Boosters of the Massillon City Schools, Inc. (the Band Boosters) was put forward at the band booster meeting on January 21. In accordance with the by-laws, the amendment was presented to the boosters at this meeting, and will be discussed and voted upon at the next band booster meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, February 17, 2016.

The proposed amendment and rationale are as follows (additions are in bold and underlined):

Amend Article III – Officers and Their Elections, Section 3.2

The offices of President, Vice President, Administrative Secretary, Coordinating Secretary, and Treasurer shall first be selected from parents/guardians of current high school band members. The Alumni Representative must be a 3 or 4 Star Tiger Swing Band Alumnus. The Past Booster Representative must be a former voting member of the organization. If no parent/guardian of a current high school band member is available to fill the positions, other qualified individuals, who are approved by the current executive committee can be considered.

Frequently band booster volunteers working in concessions or other volunteer roles don't meet the definition of parents/guardians. Examples could include siblings, relatives, or boyfriend/girlfriend of a parent/guardian. In some of these cases, the individual would be willing to serve in a band booster officer capacity, but is prevented from doing so by the parent/guardian definition in the by-laws.

The proposed amendment would allow a non-parent/guardian, who has been approved by the executive committee, to have their name on the ballot for election as a band booster officer if, and only if, there is no parent/guardian willing to stand for election to that position.

On Saturday, January 16, many of our instrumental music students will be performing at the Solo and Ensemble Contest. This contest, held at Washington High School, is an opportunity for student performers to play selections in front of a judge, either as a soloist or as part of an ensemble. The students are rated on skills such as intonation, musicality, and accuracy, with 'I' being the highest rating.

This competition is open to the public, and runs from 8:00am until 5:00pm. If you plan to attend, please be aware that photos, videos, or sound recording is not allowed.

At the WHS Holiday Band Concert on December 17, Mr. Neel and Mrs. Smithhisler presented Dan Bolen with a 2015 Massillon Tiger Swing Band drum head, signed on the back by the students.
