The titles of Miss Massillonian and Outstanding Senior Boy are awarded based on academic performance, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and volunteer work.  Miss Massillonian is a tradition that dates back to 1941, while Outstanding Senior Boy was added sometime later.  Miss Massillonian 2017 is LeeAnn Burczynski.

The Instrumental Music program was well represented in this year's class of finalists. In addition to Piorkowski, finalists for Outstanding Senior Boy included Jordan Smith and Stephen Sober.  Finalists for Miss Massillonian included Camrynn Bickel and Victoria Nelson.

MatthewsDawson Matthews, a member of the Massillon Band program, recently passed his audition to join the United States Marine Band program. Very few high school seniors qualify to play with the United States Marine Band — in fact, Dawson believes he is the first high school senior from Stark County to pass the audition in over six years!

Matthews, who plays french horn in the WHS Wind Orchestra and mellophone in the Tiger Swing Band, qualified for assignment to the band in the french horn section. He will report for Marine Basic Training this summer, after which he will attend Marine Combat Training. Upon successful completion of both programs, he will be assigned to a Marine Band unit. Matthews has spent the last two and half years working his way through the audition process, commenting that "it's been tough, but it's not over yet." Still, he is excited for the opportunity and the challenges that await him.

More information about the Marine Band program can be found at https://www.marines.com/becoming-a-marine/enlisted/musician-enlistment-option-program.html, where they state "Members of each Marine Corps musical unit become part of a storied tradition, following in the footsteps of legendary Marine musicians like John Philip Sousa and other talented artists who, for more than 200 years, have called themselves Marines."  Active duty stations include Quantico, VA, Cherry Point, NC, Camp Lejuene, NC, Parris Island, SC, New Orleans, LA, Camp Pendleton, CA, Miramar, CA, San Diego, CA, Kaneohe Bay, HI, Okinawa, Japan, and the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC

Congratulations, Dawson!!

The Massillon Tigers Band Boosters consists of band parents and other persons interested in promoting instrumental music in the MCSD. If your child is involved in the band program, you are already a member! The Boosters staff the concession stands during football games and other band events, maintain and organize the band uniforms, act as chaperones to away games/events, and provide support to the band directors.

As we near the end of this school year, we are also nearing the election of officers for the 2017-2018 academic year.  Elections will be held on May 4th, just prior to the 7:00pm Spring Concert.  Any band parent, current or incoming, who is interested in running for office, is asked to submit a short bio to Kristy Jedel or Amy Paul via email (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) or turn it in at the booster meeting on April 20th.  The bio need only be 2-3 sentences, including your name and the position you are interested in.

All the officer positions will be elected in May:

  • President
  • Vice-President
  • Treasurer
  • Administrative Secretary
  • Coordinating Secretary
  • Alumni Representative
  • Past Booster Representative

If you wish to know more about the responsibilities of each position, please speak with one of the current officers, or visit the Band Boosters page. There you will find a roster of current officers and position descriptions.  The next booster meeting is April 20th.  Meetings are held in the WHS Band Room (Door 23) at 7:00pm and usually run less than an hour.
